Brainspotting is a cutting edge new treatment modality created by David Grand, PhD in 2003.
It is a brain body based therapy used to treat trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, unhappiness, guilt, shame, and many more experiences you may have had or are having in life. Our practitioner, SoCorro Miles, has been personally trained by the founder of Brainspotting.
Engaging in Brainspotting offers the ability to heal from hurts, break past mental blocks, and gain understanding about why we act the way we do.
Traditional Talk therapy targets the Neocortex of our brain which house our higher functions such as our ability to use language, planning, organizing, etc. In traditional talk therapy we are able to access the Neocortex. This helps you learn a useful skill or put a plan into action when a problem arises such as you deciding to start therapy when there has been a change in your life.
Brainspotting is able to target the sub cortex of brain which is where we hold our trauma from each life event. Each trauma we face in life changes the wiring of the brain causing us to respond and think in ways that keep us safe. In that moment or season of life, these responses are effective in keeping us safe. However, once we move past the moment or season these responses are no longer appropriate in our present life. This may be happening if you notice the same negative patterns in your relationships, having constant feelings of loneliness, lack of career progression, increase in anxiety or depression- I could go on and on with this list because there are so many traumas we face each day.
David Grand states "When something important bothers us, we become activated, and there are positions in our visual field that match up with the places we are holding this activation in our brain. Reflecting on where we feel the activation in our body further focuses our brain on this holding place." This reflection is possible in rewiring of neural pathways in the brain.
If you are curious and willing to give Brainspotting a try it may lead to breakthroughs that could help you move forward with life.
